Between 2010 and 2030, L.A.’s population of people over 65 is expected to nearly double, from 1.1 million to 2.1 million.

Input from residents will be used to develop an Age-Friendly Plan for the Los Angeles region.  This confidential PALA Survey takes about 20 minutes to complete and can be filled out by anyone 18 years of age or older who resides in the County or City of Los Angeles. Participants are asked to take the survey in their preferred language.

Culver Palms Meals on Wheels is working closely with the City of LA Dept.of Aging to move this plan forward. We thank you for your participation.

The Fourth Sunday of July

National Parents Day was established for “recognizing, uplifting, and supporting the role of parents in the rearing of children.” As we think about honoring parents, we are reminded of the many people who turn to Culver Palms Meals on Wheels when it comes time to care for an aging parent. This is especially true when long-distance caregiving is involved.

Here is one of these situations that we recall:

After her dad, Myer Huniu, had heart surgery at age 80, Lori knew he needed help. But she also knew he wanted to be independent and stay in his own home in Culver City where he had accumulated a lifetime of memories.

Since Lori lives near San Diego, she was not able to provide daily assistance to her dad, so she hired caregivers. Lori says they were great in the beginning. She gave them extra money to shop for food and cook for her dad, only to find out later that they were pocketing the money and leaving the refrigerator empty. Lori was angry and devastated when she found out her dad was left in the house with no food. That was when she
decided to start her dad on Meals on Wheels.

She appreciated the fact that we were able to meet his dietary needs by providing low salt, low sugar meals, and that he was given a snack with fresh food to eat
later in the day. That made her feel secure. She emphasized how important a fresh cooked meal is, but said the benefit of Culver Palm Meals on Wheels goes way
beyond the food. She said it was great to have someone show up every day to check on him, and to know that we would notify her if anything was amiss.

Meyer passed away in 2013 at age 87, Lori still continues to support Culver Palms Meals on Wheels. Lori closed our conversation by saying, “Thank you for being there.”
